Holidays

I shamelessly love Christmas, ever since as a child I participated in Christmas programs and I was enthralled with the nativity scene and the story of Jesus birth. For a few years during which our children were growing we put Christmas aside because we embraced the "Christmas is a pagan holiday" theory. But thankfully my own parents stalwartly continued to embrace Christmas and eventually I came to my senses and realized that pagan origin or not and that's debatable.... Christmas is a time when people open their heart to each other and it is an opportunity to reach out in love and not only that also a time to teach our kids the joy of giving to others. I returned to my love of Christmas and I believe that the heart of Jesus is to fellowship with and to love each other, not draw lines of separation with family because we disagree on whether something is pagan or not. So, I did a search for books that will hopefully give our kids a love for Jesus and the special time when we collectively celebrate his birth.
In Mouse’s Christmas Gift, written by Mindy Baker and illustrated by Dow Phumiruk, one tiny church mouse must find a way to bring Christmas spirit to his little town when Parson gets sick and the usual Christmas Eve service is cancelled. Mouse never gives up hope as he prepares the nativity set and lights a small candle in the window to signal the villagers. Mouse’s small act of faith sparks a chain reaction of hope and love, demonstrating that even the smallest creature can make a big difference. This adorable book, with a cover adorned with foil and glitter, captures the spirit of Christmas and the joy of doing for others during the holiday season.
That night, on Christmas Eve, a small group of villagers gathered in front of the darkened church. Mouse peered out the window and his heart began to pound. They came!

How in the World do I start?

Kids love to learn and do so naturally. All they need is guidance and enthusiasm. I hope to help you with both of these. This is a work in progress as I study with my own kids.   But let me introduce you to our learning style. I threw out all workbooks out of super frustration a long time ago and I haven't looked back, Not once. Other than to rejoice that I no longer have to be under that pressure.   When kids read a story they get involved and they assimilate it. They naturally come and regurgitate what they just read. Usually you don't even have to ask them. They are enthusiastic and they want you to know what they know.   With workbooks they seek information to answer questions and fill in blanks just to get the lesson done, and then promptly forget it all. Multiple choice is even worse.  While I believe in narration as a learning tool I also like to do notebooking because I like to document what they learn and they love their own books.   For a long time I made

So How Does Notebooking Work?

Notebooking has added a satisfying touch to schooling for me. I tried Lapbooking, which has the same purpose but is a bit more involved.    With Notebooking we have a theme page that has lines for writing, a printed picture and an empty spot for the kids to do their own drawing. Basically they have a paper they can fill with their own thoughts and creativity.   The beauty of it is, the kids create their own masterpeice about what they have learned and you as a mom can be satisfied that they are learning what they need to. Taking information and thinking it through and writing it on paper causes them to think about what they are learning. Plus you are documenting what they are learning.  I buy them each a binder and sheet protectors, You can use notebooking pages for pretty much every subject you cover. The only subjects I DON"T use them for is Math and Language Arts. Even though I am pretty sure you could use them for even those. Here is link to the Lifetime mem
