A First Book in American History: With Special Reference to the Lives and Deeds of Great
Americans Written in an interesting style and adding little known facts about famous Americans. This is one book I was very happy I bought. Sometimes I borrow from the library, but this one is a keeper. Continuing the biographical approach to teaching history found in his Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans, Eggleston draws a more in-depth picture of the development of the United States using the stories of the living and breathing Americans who made it all happen. Check out the used version of this book. It was available with Prime for half the price when I got mine.
Also, check out the audio version when you buy a book. Sometimes you can purchase audio at the same time you buy the print book for just a bit more. It's very helpful when you have a reluctant reader as it helps them to not fall behind.

Captain John Smith:
"If you love stories filled with swashbuckling adventure, dangerous journeys, daring escapes, and brave heroes, then this story is for you! But this is no fictional tale with an imaginary hero. This is the story of Captain John Smith and his unbelievable life. Follow along as he fights in the Crusades, escapes slavery, out-smarts pirates, and is saved by a Powhatan Indian princess. Along the way, you will learn about American history, the Jamestown settlement, the Powhatan Indians, and how John Smith truly embodied the American ideal. Grade level 4-6
Four hundred years ago, colonists voyaged across the Atlantic Ocean to discover a new world. Today, an amazing archaeological dig at historic Jamestown promises to uncover new secrets from those earliest English settlers.
Sam, Derek, and Caitlin can’t believe their luck when they are invited by Professor Evanshade to help with the archaeological digs for a week at Jamestown’s Field School. Maybe they’ll uncover something spectacular that traces all the way back to Captain John Smith and Pocahontas!
But when one of the priceless artifacts dug from the Jamestown Fort is labeled a fraud, it threatens to upend the entire archaeological project. Can the kids expose the secret conspiracy or have they finally gotten in over their heads? Journey back with them to America’s beginnings and a mystery in the shadows of Jamestown. Ages 7-12
Pocahontas: Once upon a time there was an Algonquin princess named Pocahontas, a curious 10-year-old who loved exploring the tidewater lands of her people. One day she encounters strangers, a group of people that look different from her own. She befriends them, and when her people come into conflict with these new settlers, Pocahontas steps in to save the life of one of them by offering her own. Based on the true story of Pocahontas' early life. Ages 8-12
Henry Hudson: Beyond the Sea of Ice is the story of Henry Hudson's four harrowing voyages of discovery. Bringing the skills of an experienced novelist, Goodman creates an epic narrative of Henry Hudson's passionate quest. Fernando Rangel's paintings capture the icy beauty of the North Atlantic, the lushness of the new world and the cruelty and death that accompanied a doomed voyage of discovery History has not been kind to Henry Hudson. He's been dismissed as a short-tempered man who played favorites with his crew and had an unstoppable ambition and tenacity. Although he gave his name to a mighty river, an important strait, and a huge bay, today he is remembered more for the mutiny that took his life. The grandson of a trader, Hudson sailed under both British and Dutch flags, looking for a northern route to China. Although none of his voyages led to the discovery of a northwest passage, he did explore what is now Hudson's Bay and what is now New York City. Whatever his personal shortcomings, to sail through dangerous, ice-filled waters with only a small crew in a rickety old boat, he must have been someone of rare courage and vision. In Hudson, Janice Weaver has created a compelling portrait of a man who should be remembered not for his tragic end, but for the way he advanced our understanding of the world.
Please note: Check out used book prices on Amazon as well. Sometimes they are a better buy. Also, most libraries have an online presence so that you can log in to your account and order in books. It's amazing how many books are available at the library. I found both of the books about Hudson in my local library system. Ask your library how to connect with them online.

Captain John Smith:
I embedded a documentary of the settlement at Jamestown. Please be for warned that between 6:11-6:30 there is some graphic detail about a man being burned at the stake that a sensitive child may be disturbed by. You know your child so if you can use your own judgement.
